Let's get this party started ex-pats!
I'm really interested to know where everyone is from and where they've moved to. I'd also like to know if anyone is any closer to thinking of their adopted country as 'home'.
I'm from England and I moved to America just over five years ago and I'm now based on the East Coast. I won't lie - I found it very tough at first. It's gotten a little easier... but England is still home for me!
What about the rest of you?
I'm originally from Essex but I've lived in America for around three years now. I married an American and we had to move out here because of his work. I have to say I feel very at home here and have had a great time travelling around the country, meeting new people, and getting to know more about the culture and lifestyle.
I still think of England as home but at this stage have no idea if we'll move back or not. But we have plenty of time to decide that but right now I'm enjoying life in America.
I'm from London, England but these days I call Sydney, Australia home, and it has been for more than two decades now. I think that moving out here at a young age when most of my friends were still busy getting their degrees helped a lot. I believe that the younger you are the more adaptable you are, so I'm glad that I made the move when I did. It was hard enough then but I think if I'd of been older it would of been even harder.
I'm English but I actually grew up in France and did my schooling there. I think the fact that we moved out there when I was very young and was able to pick up the language easily (Kids do at the age) is what enabled me to settle in quickly. I'm back in England now but I feel as French as I feel English, and both countries are very much home to me.
I've never been to Montana but I have visited WA - albeit briefly - and I know that Seattle is a really vibrant and exciting place. I actually wouldn't mind moving there myself.
And while I'm not an American, I've been in America long enough and visited enough places to know that no - America is not the same wherever you and that yes, sometimes you really do feel like you're abroad! I think that that's something that people who live outside of America or don't visit here very often don't realise.
Glad you've been able to make a home for yourself in WA 😀
OK I know that this is so not the same thing because all I did was move to another state and not another country - but at times it sure feels like I have! I'm from rural Montana and now live in Washington state not far from Seattle where the culture and lifestyle is very different. To non-Americans, we may be one country but don't make the mistake in thinking that all states are the same because they're not.
Montana will always be home and I try to get back whenever I can but I am definitely loving life in the PNW right now as I have been for the last fourteen years.
I've done some traveling so I am open to the idea of living overseas if the right opportunity comes up.
