The whole world is talking about it so we may as well too! We all saw the very public spat that took place on stage between Will Smith and Chris Rock on Sunday. Me personally I'm really stunned by what happened. I really don't know what to think so you know I'm shocked because everyone who knows me knows that I have very definite views on things. LOL!
But what does everyone else think? Who do you think was in the wrong? And do you think that the whole stunt was quite possibly staged?
Many of us here will have grown up with Will Smith so we know that what we've recently seen, well that's just not the Will we know and love. There's obviously more going on here than we know about. But I love how the media and the ordinary man on the street feel as though they know all the ins and outs of Will and Jada's marriage. None of us know if this outburst was down to Jada or any marital issues or whatever. Attacking Chris Rock was wrong, absolutely, but there's obviously more to this than simply just what we saw.
Will was completely out of line. What more can anyone say! I think it was right to ban him from the Oscars but I'm glad that he was allowed to keep his award. Despite what he did, taking the award from Will would have been a bit extreme.
I know everyone has been saying some very horrible things about Will and Jada but I just feel that Will has really let himself down and that's so disappointing after having had such a good track record all these years. He's always come across as such a lovely chap and then to undo all that in less than a minute. People have said that his speech would have been a lot more poignant had it not been for that slap, and I agree. When he was up there weeping and talking about how 'love makes you do crazy things,' all I could think about was how he'd belted Chris across the face just moments later. And then to see photos of him partying like nothing happened!
People do have long memories and I don't think this will be forgotten in a hurry. But that said, I do think Will can come back from this.
I know that by now most of us are so over the slap at the Oscars but I feel that I need to have my say. I grew up watching and listening to Will Smith. He was and still is one of my idols. I'm black and as a teenager to see a black man be idolized by all races and get to the top of his game was very inspiring for me and all my black friends. And as the mother of two black boys, I felt that people like Will Smith who were successful and not creating scandal everywhere they went were good role models for them.
But unfortunately this slap has set as back a lot. The stereotype of the angry black man or woman is one we're trying to get away from, the person who resorts to violence when they don't like what they see/hear rather than talk things out rationaly. And not only did Will resort to violence but he did so on a world stage - the Oscars of all the places. And not only that but he did that to another black man, the type person that Will and his wife Jada felt were under represented at the Oscars. And I felt so sorry for Chris Rock to suffer that humiliation but I feel that he recovered from it quite well.
I also noticed that there seems to be a lot of hate aimed at Jada. I don't know if this hate is justified or not justified. From what I saw there were only two people up on stage so why Jada is getting dragged into this I don't know. I know that there might be issues in the Smith's marriage but that's none of our business and for them to sort out.
This whole issue has not gone down well with me.
I'm in no way condoning what Will Smith did but let's be honest, that was very out of character for him. At least from what we can tell of him. He's been on our screens for more than thirty years and there's never been a glimpse of such behaviour in all these years. There may be something going on behind the scenes that we don't know about, but if there is a problem then I hope he gets the help he needs.
We now know that Will has resigned from the Academy but I don't know if that means he has to hand back his award. Despite his abhorrent behaviour, I do hope it doesn't come to that. Everyone has always said what a nice man Will is and that this was completely out of character for him. Clearly there's some underlying issue with him which I hope gets resolved. I also hope Chris Rock is doing all right.
